ADVANCED HEALTH TESTING

Knowledge is power

Functional lab testing is a key aspect of a biohackers health optimisation approach – because guessing isn’t good enough. By getting objective with your biochemistry, we identify opportunities to enhance your performance, recovery, and overall vitality. Using world-renowned labs and optimal ranges we provide actionable insights to help you unlock your full potential.

What is functional lab testing?

Functional lab testing offers an objective and comprehensive way to assess health and review how the body is functioning as a whole, rather than only looking for specific diseases.   Unlike conventional testing, functional testing is for those who seek answers to identify subtle imbalances that may lead to health problems if left unchecked. Many people who visit our clinic see functional testing as an investment in their current and future selves.

Being proactive with your health and utilising functional lab testing is a vital tool in longevity, disease prevention, and optimisation. By analysing key biomarkers, our practitioners gain a clearer understanding of your body’s inner workings, identifying imbalances or dysfunctions that may impact your long-term health.

Even conventional blood testing can be re-interpreted by functional medicine practitioners looking at results from an optimum ranges rather than disease cut off ranges.  Some examples of functional testing are:

  • Functional blood chemistry analysis

  • Metabolomic testing

  • Micronutrient testing

  • Comprehensive hormone testing

  • HPA Axis hormone testing

  • Digestive and Gut Function Analysis

  • Microbiome mapping

  • Biological age testing using epigenetic markers

  • DNA testing

  • Methylation testing

  • Food sensitivity testing

Key differences from conventional testing

In functional and personalised medicine, lab testing powers personalised protocol. We are often asked how it is different from conventional testing.  Key differences include:

  • Focus on optimisation: Functional tests aim to identify imbalances and optimise bodily function, rather than focusing solely on diagnosing diseases
  • Narrower reference ranges: Results are interpreted using optimal ranges, which are narrower than the broader “normal” ranges used in conventional testing, allowing for a more precise evaluation
  • Comprehensive analysis: These tests often measure multiple markers simultaneously, offering a holistic view of your health
  • Personalised insights: Interpretation considers individual factors, including biomarker ratios, lifestyle, and unique health goals, for tailored recommendations
  • Proactive approach: Functional testing supports early detection of imbalances, aiming to address issues before they progress into more significant health concerns

Frequently

Asked

Questions

How do I order a functional lab test?

You have two options:

  1. Book a kickstart appointment – this allows us to understand your goals, health status and requirements and we can recommend the right tests for you. Book a kickstart here
  2. If you know which test you wish to complete, contact us to order your test, then you can attend your kickstart appointment after your test results are back. Email [email protected] or call us on 1300 614 814

Then:

  • You’ll be set up with a patient dashboard that will house additional support on how to take your sample for your test
  • We’ll let you know once your test results are back, to make sense of the report which is designed for practitioner supported interpretation, we highly recommend a Test Interpretation Session

How much does functional lab testing cost?

Functional lab testing prices range from around $200 to $1,400 depending on the test.

Where do I do the tests?

Test kits are sent to your home.

You usually take samples for the tests at home, with the exception of blood draws which you will visit a local collection centre per the instructions in your test kit.

Why aren't the tests covered by Medicare?

Unfortunately, Medicare coverage in Australia is limited to conventional medical tests, designed to support doctors with detecting disease.

Can't my doctor order functional testing?

Not all doctors (general practitioners) are functional practitioners. Interpreting and analysing functional testing requires specialised expertise, advanced training, and collaboration with dedicated laboratories focused on functional health.  The practitioners at Melbourne Functional Medicine can order your functional test, interpret it and clinically support you with improving your results.

Why does functional testing take so long?

Results are usually back within 4-5 weeks of the lab receiving the test sample.

Functional testing usually takes longer than regular GP testing due to its complexity and specialised nature. These tests involve intricate procedures, such as multiple stages of analysis, advanced sample preparation, longer incubation periods, and the use of sophisticated equipment, all of which extend processing times.

Unlike standard clinical tests, functional lab samples are usually sent to specialised facilities, adding to turnaround times due to shipping (often overseas) and the higher workloads these unique labs often face. Additionally, the tests require skilled professionals to perform and interpret results, but the limited availability of qualified personnel can create bottlenecks. To ensure accuracy, labs implement rigorous quality control measures and verification steps, which, while essential, further increase delays. Many functional tests also rely on dedicated equipment, specialised reagents, and time-consuming setup or calibration, all of which can slow processing.

Despite these delays, we strongly believe the detailed insights provided by functional lab testing make the longer turnaround time absolutely worthwhile.
