Introducing the MyDNA comprehensive genetics test for methylation

Your genes are like the hand of cards you’ve been dealt, and while you can’t change them, knowing what you’ve been dealt goes a long way in helping you play a better game, for life.

Rather than focus on disease risk, this test empowers you with information on how nutrient deficiency or toxicity may play a role in affecting gene function, including methylation, why certain health disorders may run in your family, and what you can actively do now to decrease the probability of disease through the application of diet, lifestyle and exercise to adjust the expression of these genes. This is an empowering test that analyses your base genetic blueprint. It is a starting point so that you can identify potential weaknesses and then learn of various ways to epigenetically improve them.

Why should I do a genetic methylation test?

A genetic methylation test identifies single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that may impair methylation, a process critical for numerous bodily functions. By pinpointing genetic variations, such as those in the MTHFR, MTR, MTRR, and COMT genes, the test provides valuable insights for personalised nutritional support to enhance methylation efficiency.

For instance, MTHFR affects folate metabolism, and its variants can lead to folate deficiency or elevated homocysteine levels, increasing the risk of cardiovascular issues. MTR and MTRR impact the conversion of homocysteine into methionine, with variants linked to higher homocysteine levels and associated health risks, like heart disease and dementia. The COMT gene influences neurotransmitter metabolism, and its variations may contribute to mood and behavioural disorders.

By addressing these genetic factors with targeted dietary and supplement strategies, individuals can support optimal methylation, potentially reducing the risk of chronic illnesses and improving overall health.

Frequently

Asked

Questions

How do I order this genetic methylation test?

Contact us at [email protected] or 1300 614 814, so we can ensure this is the right test for you, then we’ll set you up as a patient, order and despatch a test kit to your nominated address.

You’ll be set up with a patient dashboard that will house additional support on how to take your sample for this test.

We’ll let you know once your test results are back, to make sense of the report which provides a 100+ page report.  We highly recommend a Test Interpretation Session.

Is this methylation test for me?

This test is for you if:

  • You want to play a proactive role in your health outcomes
  • You are curious to know why certain diseases run in your family
  • You want to know if there are certain nutrients your body requires more of
  • You are interested in a genetic methylation test from Australia
  • You want to personalise your health protocol specifically to your genetics

How do I test for methylation?

A myDNA test ordered via our practitioners, covers numerous SNPs related to your methylation efficiency and if you may need practive support to help your body with this important function.  It will give you results for your MTHFR genetic status as well ask other key SNPs related to methylation.

It involves a simple cheek swab.

How long do test results take to come back?

Results are usually back within 5-6 weeks of the lab receiving the test sample. We’ll notify you when your results are back.

Does this report tell me which diseases I am at a higher risk for?

The myDNA Comprehensive Health Report does not focus on disease statistics based on SNPs. Rather, the analysis gives you an understanding of how nutritional deficiency or toxicity may play a role in affecting your gene function and hence the root causes of certain health disorders may run in your family, and what you can actively do to decrease the probability of disease through the epigenetic application of diet, lifestyle and exercise.

Where can I get a genetic methylation test?

If you are based anywhere in Australia our team at Melbourne Functional Medicine can support you with getting a test kit for a genetic methylation test.

Just email or call our clinic and we will ensure this test is right for you and support you through the process:  [email protected] or 1300 614 814.

Should I retest?

No.  You do not need to test your genes more than once for genetic methylation SNPs.   You can however, test your epigenetics if you wish to see how your genes are expressing and a Comprehensive Blood (and metabolite) Panel can be helpful to show you if your interventions are helping address any genetic methylation inefficiencies.
