Healthspan: Redefining how we approach health and longevity

Did you know that the average person spends the last 20% of their life in poor health? Imagine adding not just years to your life, but life to your years. That’s what healthspan is all about – it’s more than just living a long life – it’s about living a life full of vitality, free from disease and full of energy. If lifespan is about how long you live, healthspan is about how well you live those years.

Think about it: do you want to live for 90 years but spend the last 20 in poor health, unable to enjoy life? Or, would you rather imagine waking up at 90, not just alive, but thriving – enjoying time with loved ones, with vibrant health right up until the end?

The good news is that staying healthy as you age is achievable. It starts with taking charge of your health today.

Where our healthcare system falls short

Let’s face it: if you’ve got a broken leg or pneumonia, our healthcare system is incredible. It patches you up and gets you back on your feet. But for chronic issues like autoimmunity, inflammation, or IBS, it often doesn’t work as well. And that’s not because it’s bad – it’s because it was designed for management of acute conditions vs chronic ones.

Modern medicine is fantastic at saving lives, but it isn’t always great at improving quality of life. For chronic conditions, we need a different approach. This is where functional medicine steps in, bridging the gap between conventional and holistic care.

In functional medicine, we often refer to the functional medicine tree to explain how health issues develop and how to resolve them. The elements at the top – the leaves – represent the things that bother us: symptoms and diseases. These are what we notice and suffer from, and the temptation is to treat them as the problem.

But what’s happening with the leaves is rarely the true issue. Imagine a tree in your garden with dehydrated, dying leaves. You wouldn’t think, I’ll just paint the leaves green, and everything will look fine. That wouldn’t fix the tree. Instead, you’d ask, Why are the leaves like this? Maybe it’s not getting enough water. Maybe the soil lacks nutrients.

The real solution lies below the surface, in the roots. The roots represent the underlying causes of disease – things happening beneath the surface that lead to the visible issues above. If we ignore the roots and just focus on the leaves, the tree’s health won’t improve.

This is the functional medicine approach: figure out your root causes, address those, and build health from the ground up. By looking deeper and asking why symptoms are happening, we can target the source of the problem instead of just masking it.

So when someone comes to me with chronic issues or unexplained symptoms, I don’t just see the ‘leaves’. I ask: What’s happening with the roots? Is it inflammation, gut health, nutrient imbalances, or something else? By addressing the roots, we can help the entire tree and the person thrive.

The spectrum of health: Health is more than “not sick”

Health isn’t binary. It’s a spectrum. On one end, you’ve got poor health, and on the other, vibrant health. Most of us fall somewhere in the middle. The exciting part is: you can always move forward on this spectrum.

For years, I’ve helped people who were starting from a place of poor health. They needed a detective to figure out their root causes and get them back on track. But lately, there’s been a surge of interest in health optimisation. People want to make their good health even better.

No matter where you’re starting, the goal is the same: move your health forward.

“Health isn’t just about not being sick – it’s about thriving”.

Short-term survival vs long-term vitality: your body’s internal tug of war

Your body is constantly deciding how to allocate its resources.

Blood flow is a perfect example. Did you know that one-third of your body’s blood flow is allocated to your digestive system? And 75% of that blood can be moved in or out of the gut on demand.

Imagine you’re running from a lion. Your body diverts blood away from the gut to your muscles so you can run faster. It’s a smart survival mechanism. But in the modern world, we’re not running from lions – we’re stressed about deadlines, bills, or traffic. Yet our body responds the same way.

This stress response deprioritises functions important to our future survival, in preference to our immediate survival, including:

  • Digestion: We don’t break down our food efficiently or effectively, leaving us with less energy and more inflammation
  • Removal: Detoxification processes slow down, leaving your body less effective at clearing out waste
  • Repair: Immune system functions like healing and regeneration take a back seat
  • Regulation: Our hormones become dysregulated

If we’re constantly in a stress response, these vital processes don’t get the resources they need. Not a problem for a day, a week, a month, but over time, this impacts our healthspan.

Personalised health: The key to healthspan

We’re not all the same. What works for one person might not work for another. That’s why personalised health is so important.

Your genes are the blueprint, but your lifestyle plays the music

Your genes are like a CD. They contain all the information needed to produce music, but unless the CD is played, you don’t hear a thing. Similarly, your genes are just the blueprint – they’re not actively shaping your health until they’re played.

This playing of the genes is called epigenetics. It’s the process where certain genes are turned on or off depending on your environment and lifestyle. Imagine stepping into a kitchen with a recipe book. You’re not going to cook every recipe at once. What you choose to prepare depends on the ingredients you have, the season, your preferences, and how much time you’ve got.

Your body works the same way. It selects which “recipes” (genes) to activate based on your circumstances. For example, if you’re living in a cold climate, your body might prioritise genes that improve cold tolerance. If you move to a hot desert, those genes get turned off, and others are switched on to help you adapt to the heat.

Your lifestyle – what you eat, how you sleep, how you manage stress – is the DJ deciding which “tracks” get played. By making conscious, informed choices, you can influence how your genes are expressed and, ultimately, improve your health outcomes.

The habits that support healthspan

Your habits are the foundation of your healthspan and can be oversimplified into these four key areas:

  • Nutrition: Nutrient-poor processed foods drive inflammation and chronic disease, while a nutrient-dense diet tailored to your needs supports energy, digestion, and vitality. Small, conscious changes in what and how you eat can yield lasting health benefits
  • Sleep: Poor sleep weakens your immune system, impairs cognition, and accelerates ageing. Prioritising quality rest allows your body to repair, detoxify, and recharge, giving you the resilience to thrive
  • Movement: A sedentary lifestyle weakens muscles and increases disease risk, while regular movement boosts strength, cardiovascular health, and mental well-being. Build movement into your life, incidentally, and intentionally in a way you enjoy
  • Mind: Chronic stress keeps your body in survival mode, blocking repair and detoxification. Managing stress through mindfulness, connection, or time in nature shifts your body into a state where healing and growth are possible

Small improvements in these areas can significantly impact your healthspan.

A simple test: What is your body prioritising?

Ask yourself: is my body focusing on immediate survival or long-term health? When you’re stressed, eating poorly, or skipping sleep, your body is in survival mode. But when you eat well, sleep deeply, and manage stress, you’re prioritising future survival and creating health.

This is where functional medicine shines. It helps you identify root causes, optimise your daily habits, and use personalised data, like genetic testing, to make informed choices.

Healthspan isn’t about perfection. It’s about moving forward on the health spectrum in a way that feels sustainable for you. Maybe you’re happy with small improvements that are easy to maintain, or maybe you’re ready to go all-in.

“What’s most important is recognising that health is something you create. It’s not just about avoiding illness – it’s about living your best life”.

The choices you make every day shape your healthspan. So, what’s one thing you could do today to move your health forward?
